Travelling around is relatively easy because the EU has funded enormous motorways which the Spaniards don’t need and never use, so you can get to and from most places far quicker than you might think.

The Costa del Sol stretches from just north of Gibraltar up to Malaga and has been colonised by expat Brits.  Decent beaches at Sotogrande, Estepona and Marbella.  Further back there are still some authentic traditional villages including Castellar, Casares, Jimena and Jimera.  Plenty of shopping, for those who like it, at Marbella.

Tarifa is east of Gibraltar and has probably the best beaches in the area.  It is also probably a very good place to find cheap accommodation.
